Consumer Guide

After 26 years in business, it amazes me that many painting companies carry no insurance and pay their employees under the table and do not carry workman’s compensation insurance. Homeowners who hire these contractors put themselves at great risk because accidents happen. Climbing high ladders and using power tools can sometimes make painting very dangerous work. A contractor, not properly insured, transfers their risk to the homeowner resulting in costly lawsuits for lost wages and medical care.

Mike Orloff Painting carries a $2 million liability insurance policy, provides workers compensation insurance, and is licensed by the State of California. Before hiring a contractor, check their license status with the California State License Board at 1-800-321-2752 or online at www.cslb.ca.gov.

Checking to see if a contractor’s employees are covered by workers compensation is difficult. Ask your contractor to provide you a copy of a current certificate of workers compensation insurance coverage.

When hiring a contractor your most important tool is checking references. It’s easy for a homeowner to be tempted to accept the lowest contractor bid – but as the old saying goes, “you get what you pay for."
